Has organic reach been in decline for a while, but social media holidays can help brands get a little boost. Coupled with the right hashtag, these holidays provide an opportunity for businesses to reach out to like-minded people.
Who Invents Social Media Holidays?
Some days are the by-product of marketing campaigns. Some have been declared by official organizations such as the United Nations. Others seem to have manifested themselves through the sheer absurdity of the internet.
Some days have multiple public holidays, like May 7th, which happens to be National Beer Day in the United States and World Health Day. Some days are about serious issues, others are about National Just Move Day (August 27). Some are purely social media holidays, while many are non-social media holidays as well.
Not every social media holiday is worth celebrating. Find the holidays that fit your niche.
This approach increases the chances of connecting with people who share common values and interests, rather than gimmicks.

Fenty Beauty: Black History Month
Fenty Beauty kicked off this year’s Black History Month with a little history lesson of its own, courtesy of its founder, Rihanna.
Way back in 2011, a Twitter user aggressively asked why Rihanna’s hair looked “so windy” in the music video for her song “Man Down.” In response, the music and business mogul clapped back, “Because I’m a black bitch!!!!” Seven years later, Fenty Beauty launched a liquid eyeliner with the iconic name “Cuz I’m black.”
The uncompromising, powerful line speaks to both the brand purpose and the Fenty Beauty audience. We give it a setback– Kiss of the chef with lipstick.
Knix: International Women’s Day
Knix CEO Joanna Griffiths delivered a message of support on International Women’s Day… amid the birth of twin girls. It really doesn’t get any better than the brand.
Heartfelt and urgent, the post demonstrates the priorities of the intimate apparel founder, including Rejection of investors who disapprove of fundraising during pregnancy.
Food for the soul: Carbonara day
While we’d all love to celebrate Carbonara Day, it suits some organizations like Food for Soul better than others. The nonprofit founded by Italian chefs Massimo Bottura and Lara Gilmore used their ingenuity to save food with a banana peel carbonara recipe. With the “care” on #CAREbonara day, followers were encouraged to donate and share with others.
Time’s Up: International Transgender Day of Visibility
As a charity dedicated to helping victims of sexual harassment, this post from Time’s Up is a meaningful expression of solidarity with the transgender community. The simple gesture garnered more than six times the engagement than the post that followed it.
National Center for Women’s Rights: Equal Pay Day
In this TikTok video, the folks behind the National Women’s Law Center break down the importance of Equal Pay Day with cold, hard facts. The explainer garnered more than 47 times more views than the account’s previous post.

Thrive Market: Teacher Appreciation Week
Thrive Market thanked the teachers with a giveaway. The competition also served as a reminder that the online grocery wholesaler offers teachers free membership all year round.
WWF #WorldWithoutNature: World Animal Day
Inspired by One Minute Briefs, World Wildlife Fund challenged brands Participate in World Wildlife Day by removing nature from their logos. The goal of the campaign was to create a stark portrait of a world devoid of nature.
📢Today, nature has disappeared from the logos of the world’s biggest brands 📢 Here’s why: A #WorldWithoutNature is a world that is incomplete 🛑🌳 pic.twitter.com/cd8lSfLcAJ
— WWF (@WWF) March 3, 2021
As planned, #WorldWithoutNature generated plenty of social awareness and discussion, including an astute observation from climate activist Greta Thunberg:
Today we are discussing a #WorldWithoutNature as if it meant that “in the future our children will not be able to see pandas” or that “we will no longer be able to eat certain types of food”.
A world without nature is no world. Stop separating “man” and “nature”. Man is part of nature.

B Corp: National Beer Day
B Corp used National Beer Day to highlight its community of certified brewers. These posts benefited from numerical strength because they could generate signal strength by tagging relevant accounts. By touting breweries by region, B Corp’s National Beer Day celebrations shared his community’s tour de force.
