Google Search Rating Replace January 14th & fifteenth

There may have been another unconfirmed one on Friday and Saturday, January 14 and 15 Google search ranking algorithm update. This comes a few days after the unconfirmed January 11 update. There is some chatter, but this time the Google tracking tools are showing much higher volatility.

There appears to be more volatility this morning, Monday 17th January. It’s still a bit early to see as the chatter doesn’t match what the tools are showing at the moment. Of course, today is an American holiday that honors Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Day. That might result in less chatter as some are disabled, but it wouldn’t directly represent why the tools are showing so many changes.

So if you’ve noticed ranking fluctuations around this time, you’re not alone.

This time I’ll start by sharing what the tools showed on Friday and Saturday but seemed to calm down on Sunday.

Here are some of the rumors I found about these ranking changes, swings and volatility.

Yesterday’s traffic and today’s SEMRUSH report show I may have reverted to the poor results I was getting last week. I suppose today will decide whether that’s right or not, but it’s certainly a slow start.

Anyone else see a short-lived reprieve from bad traffic?

Looks like a huge drop in US traffic this morning but it’s only 6am so hard to tell. Every other place is zooming. One of my smaller competitors just overtook everyone to the top after months of languishing. My ranking is still at a low level and not recovering at all, but the traffic has been better, albeit of low quality. The requests all come from clueless people on a low budget and are highly unrealistic about what things cost, so half the time I ignore them or delete them without replying. That’s a big difference this time compared to last year. The New Year’s traffic gains appear to be continuing in traffic outside the US. But US traffic is still severely throttled. Once again I’m slowly losing the top 3/10/20 terms…no recovery of the 50+% of the top 3/10/20 terms that have been lost since this time last year. Those are gone forever for any website with commercial intent, and that traffic goes to informational sites and how-to articles. That New Year’s traffic jam is leading to some conversions, though, so that’s one small thing to be thankful for… as long as it lasts. So far a much busier than average Sunday traffic, even with a 3 hour run.

US traffic is normal to me but I don’t know why, something just doesn’t feel right.

Sensors are up again. Perhaps too many sites have benefited from the recent updates, so it’s time to “adjust” things now.
