While e-commerce has seen a big boost in the last two years as a result of the pandemic, social media platforms have also been working to get in on the action by offering more direct in-stream purchasing options and helping users to both find as well as buy items without ever leaving their apps.

But are consumers becoming more comfortable with in-stream shopping and providing their payment details directly on each platform?

It seems that according to the latest research, they are off The influencer marketing factory, the surveyed over 1000 US consumers In early December last year, to get their take on social commerce — which, as the IMF notes, is a direct in-stream purchase that doesn’t direct users to a third-party site to make a purchase.

Of particular note: 57% of respondents said they bought something during a live stream. That’s another indicator of why Instagram, Facebook, youtube, Pinterest, and tick tock are all investing in live stream commerce to fuel their own shopping opportunities.

Evolving user behavior is key to getting people so used to paying money on social apps that shopping becomes second nature. Expect a bigger push in in-stream payments in various forms (subscriptions, donations, etc.) as each platform tries to encourage more in-app spend to encourage direct shopping.

And based on those stats, this push will indeed yield benefits.
