Meta Takes Subsequent Steps In direction of VR Social with the Growth of Horizon Worlds

Meta has announced that its Horizon Worlds VR creation and interaction platform for all users in the USA and Canada, which will serve as an important introduction to VR for many new Meta VR users who will find a headset under the Christmas tree this year.

As explained by Meta:

“Horizon Worlds is a social VR experience where you can create and explore together. Since When it started as a beta version by invitation only last year, we were amazed by the community that was forming and inspired by the unique experiences it created. “

As you can see in the video, Horizon Worlds is something like the capital city in The Lego Movie, where users can build whatever they want and invite others to join the experience. There are also various uses and options in Horizon where you can hang out with friends or play games, take quizzes, and more.

Though no legs. Legs are not welcome in the metaverse, at least at this stage.

The expansion of access to Horizon Worlds comes at an important time as Quest 2 headsets are already being sold three times higher than previous VR devices, based on estimates. Last month, Qualcomm, which provides chips for Quest units, said Meta 10 million Quest 2 systems have already been sold, and while Meta hasn’t released official sales figures, the indicators suggest that a lot more people are paying attention to VR now, which was likely compounded by the company’s Metaverse-inspired name change.

With that in mind, as mentioned, there are expected to be some Quest 2 units wrapped up in festive wrapping paper right now, and with these new users going online in the next few weeks, Meta needs to offer compelling experiences, and ideally social VR tools to capitalize on that attention.

While AR will play a huge role in the next phase of digital engagement and interaction, the true vision of a fully immersive metaverse that forms a computer-generated alternate reality where anything is possible can really only happen in VR.

That is the vision of Meta-CEO Mark Zuckerberg presented in October on Facebook Connect when he revealed the name change from “Meta”.

The only way to get involved in fully immersive environments like this one is through a VR headset, which is another reason why the Horizon Worlds expansion is so important and why Meta is interested in bringing it out and getting the ball in to bring wider acceptance to VR, which will also contain new games (Meta adds a new ‘Arena fight3v3 laser tag game today, while other, more advanced games like ‘Grand Theft Auto’ VR is coming soon) and other experiences.

Horizon Worlds could eventually be the next evolutionary step in social media interaction, and as VR adoption increases, so does the impulse for other people to purchase their own unit to join their friends in this new experience.

The next level of digital engagement is coming soon, as is the metaverse and more immersive creative options for connecting.

Horizon Worlds can be downloaded for free on Quest 2 here.
