Although long before the advent of social media it was common practice to draw comparisons between Nazism and elements of the Third Reich, it is increasingly used to criticize authorities for enforcing rules they do not like. This has been the rule for many decades. However, it rose under the Trump administration. It was also directed against Democratic mayors and governors who ordered bans in connection with the Covid-19 epidemic.

On Tuesday, the conservative commentator Todd Starnes made a comparison between the New York Police Department (NYPD) and the infamous Gestapo, the secret police founded by Hermann Göring in 1933. Starnes said diners had to go to a Brooklyn restaurant when they refused to show their vaccination cards.

Starnes (@toddstarnes) shared a link on Twitter with his headline comment, “It’s a sad day in America when the police act like the Gestapo.”

Podcaster Benny Johnson shared the footage under the heading “Evil”. Gestapo. KGB. NYPD attacks a 5 year old who is eating pizza. You oath breakers must take off your badges. New York City failed as a state.

In the early afternoon hours there were more than 100,000 tweets discussing the term “Gestapo”. Many people claimed that police actions were the cause of Black Lives Matters. While others suggested the wrong equivalency.

Johnny Akzam, activist (@JohnnyAkzam) was one of those who tried to fix the problem by writing, “I don’t think people are realizing their inconsistencies. Introspection please. Thin-blue Conservatives were mad at police officers who use vaccination mandates. While they gassed and attacked legitimate demonstrators, they did not call them Gestapo.

Will Black, @WillBlackWriter, also addressed the issue. He tweeted: “People who support a racist president who came to power with the help of far-right Bannon. right Breitbart. and Nazis like Richard Spencer don’t do well with words like Gestapo. “

This case begs the question of whether these comparisons should be made to some of the most vicious, corrupt, and insidious regimes in history. On social media it is easy to insult the opposing side like “Nazi” and “Gestapo”, especially if they are not supportive.

It is hard to believe that few people know more about the Gestapo than the television programs and films. The Gestapo was actually administered by the RSHA, the Reich Security Main Office. This office played an important role in the Holocaust. The International Military Tribunal (IMT), which began in November 1945, declared it a criminal organization.

In its history there were strict protocols to protect the identity of Gestapo field workers, and an agent only had to present his arrest warrant without personal details or a photo – therefore the comparison with a uniformed police is largely misplaced.

“And when we weaken the language on topics that involve injustice and cruel acts against groups of people, we are doing humanity, history and, most importantly, those who originally harmed, a disservice,” added Bennett, who is also in the field Journalism and Public Relations has taught relationships for 15 years in a private institution. The internet is a catalyst for these situations as it allows those with the same immature language standards to interact and band together, thereby reinforcing what they are expressing.
