Goldman Sachs survey overview

A study by Goldman Sachs surveyed 1,145 small business owners among 48 states in the US in August. The data comes in during the National Small Business Week Summit and revealed that small businesses are struggling to access capital and obtain cash reserves.

Only 38% of small business owners believe conditions in the US are going in the right direction, down 29% since June.

In today’s financial market, 81% of small business owners say inflationary pressures have increased since June and 84% have seen operating costs rise. A sizeable majority of small businesses report that inflation has had a negative impact on the financial health of their business.

As Covid-19 cases continue to rise, small businesses across the country face greater workforce challenges, including recruitment, mental health and childcare.

  • 80% of small business owners say difficulties hiring their employees hurt their bottom line
  • 49% say they or their employees have faced mental health problems as a result of the pandemic, and only 19% say they can afford the mental health resources of their employees
  • With children returning to distance learning, 44% of respondents said that childcare would make it difficult to keep staff

A significant number of small business owners are assisting the federal government in creating a long-term low-interest loan guarantee program to help rebuild balance sheets. 96% say state and local governments should prioritize access to capital for small businesses.
