Whether you desire to be cozied-up in a cottage in the north of England surrounded by greenery and soothing rain or typing away under the sun from the beautiful beaches of Seychelles, your dream of becoming a digital nomad is within your grasp. It may feel intimidating to begin the process, or you might not have any idea of where to start.
Here is a compiled list of 5 steps to consider when taking the plunge into a digital nomad lifestyle.
What is a digital nomad?
A digital nomad is defined as an individual who earns a living by working online from anywhere they want in the world, rather than from a specific location. Whether it be a remote job, entrepreneurship, freelance work, or anything in between, being a digital nomad gives you the freedom to live and work from anywhere you please.
The Hierarchy To Becoming A Digital Nomad
You will be relieved to know there is no required order or list of steps in starting this lifestyle. However, when you are getting your things in order, it’s important to map out everything you need to do before you jet off.
For example, if you are applying for a new job that allows you to work remotely, updating your resume is a high priority on your to-do list. Or if you are going to sell your possessions, it’s dire to make sure all required documentation is gathered, signed, and potentially even notarized to ensure a smooth transition.
Even though there is no particular order in which you are required to do things when preparing for your nomad adventure, the following list has been arranged in an order to ease the transition into this new lifestyle.

Finding Employment
The key to becoming a digital nomad is finding a job path or career that allows you the freedom to live this lifestyle. Having the privilege to pursue your passion and turn it into a career that allows you to travel the world is what makes a nomadic lifestyle so special.
When you are searching for a new role in the hopes of having the option for remote work, only apply for jobs that allow their employees to work remotely. You can turn your side hustle into a full-time entrepreneurship gig, and manage it from the beaches of Bali or the peaks of the Swiss Alps. If you love your current position but are unsure if you can work remotely, ask your boss. You might be pleasantly surprised by what they have to say.

Choose your location
As the famous saying goes, “The world is your oyster!”, and it is magnificently accurate. One of the best parts of being a digital nomad is having the freedom to travel the world and live anywhere your heart desires. However, when choosing your location, it’s important to make sure it is nomad friendly. Will you have access to powerful WiFi? Will you have a quiet space to conduct meetings or presentations when needed? Can you afford to live in this location for the duration in which you want to stay? Does the time zone of this country coincide with your schedule, if you have one?
Another extremely important factor to consider when moving across the globe: How long do you want to live in a certain location? Is there a limited number of days you can stay in one place until you must obtain a work visa? If yes, are you prepared to do the legal paperwork for the said visa? If not, are you ready to frequently change locations? Do you have to pay taxes in this location depending on how long you are there?
Do not let these questions intimidate you, because more often than not you are quickly able to find resolutions for all of them. When you finally decide on your first, second, and even third location, take the time to do your research to make sure you are going to be able to fulfill your nomad goals while living a happy, legal lifestyle in the process.

Healthcare is different all around the world, so it is imperative you are prepared for any incidents you may potentially encounter. Depending on which location in the world you choose, the local healthcare can be relatively higher or lower compared to the systems and coverage where you live. When choosing to go nomad, it is important to consider purchasing travel insurance that will cover your needs or an emergency situation no matter where you are geographically located.

Materialistic Belongings
Now that you have figured out your first nomad destination and secured yourself the proper insurance, it is time to take note of everything you own. If you own your own home, will you sell it? Rent it? Do you have leases you need to cancel? For all of the things you plan to leave behind (your clothes, dishes, furniture, etc.), will you sell all of it? Donate it? Put it in storage?
Evaluating everything you own and have to your name will simplify the transition into a nomadic lifestyle, no matter how arduous it may seem. The important thing to remember is to stay organized, ask for help when you need it, and have fun in the process.
