The Matrix Resurrections’ Ending, Defined

Let’s dive into how Neo and Trinity sparked a new war with the machines to create a game-changing ending for The Matrix Resurrections.

WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for The Matrix Resurrections, now in theaters and on HBO Max.

In The Matrix Resurrections, Neo (Keanu Reeves) decided that he just couldn’t leave his beloved Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) behind despite once more being free from the machines. As a result, he conjured a plan with Sati (Priyanka Chopra) and Bugs (Jessica Henwick) to infiltrate the new Machine City to get her body back. It led to a brutal battle, as expected, with yet another game-changing ending for the franchise that reignited the sense of hope the Oracle spoke of in past movies.

The machines rebuilt, keeping Neo and Trinity’s body to generate power, putting them into a new Matrix where they’d be around each other but never know they were soulmates. This gave the bots exponential energy needed to survive, but a liberated Neo brokered a deal to meet the controller known as the Analyst (Neil Patrick Harris) to ask for Trinity.

Trinity came to the meeting, too, but opted to stay in the Matrix as she got fooled into thinking the false reality and motherhood she had as a wife named Tiff was real. However, Trinity realized she needed Neo and needed out, which led to a massive brawl. The digital essence of Sati and the other rogue program in a nanobot Morpheus used the meeting as a distraction, incorporating Bugs’ brainwaves as they snuck into the citadel. There, they extracted Trinity’s mind from the pod and planned to create a portal to pull them out.

In the war, a shocking ally emerged as Agent Smith returned, pissed how the Analyst subjugated him and Neo, keeping them in the Matrix to work as game developers. Smith saved the lovers by firing on the Analyst, temporarily rendering him inert while joking about their alliance being over now. He put his shades on and left, as the Analyst had already informed his agents to attack.

This “swarm” saw people getting possessed and turning into bots all over the city, even dropping down from high-rises to turn themselves into bombs. Bugs’ soldiers faced heavy fire as they tried to guard Trinity and Neo, eventually needing Bugs to come into the firefight to help rescue them. As for Trinity and Neo, they wreaked havoc, with Trinity piloting a bike and Neo using his telekinesis to stop bullets, divert bombs and crash vehicles like a cyber-Jedi.

Who Really Is The One In The Matrix Resurrections?

Neo and Trinity’s journey in The Matrix Resurrections took them to a skyscraper where Neo blew choppers up and attempted to jump off a building with Trinity. He was trying to access the power of the One, knowing the woman he loved depended on it, as well as the rebels at IO, a new version of Zion. The film had him previously trying to walk off buildings when fragments of his old life returned, so he was convinced this was the moment he’d fly now.

But as they leaped off, Neo was not the one who was flying — it was Trinity! She held him up, stunning Neo as it seemed like she’s the real One, or maybe they both are. Either way, Trinity taunted the new agents arriving and flew away with Neo, getting through the portal and back to Bugs’ ship, the Mnemosyne, where she finally reunited with her beau.

Who Enacts The Rebuild In The Matrix Resurrections?

The Matrix Resurrections concluded with Trinity and Neo flying into the Analyst’s new apartment, gloating that his failure to contain them drew the ire of the senior machines, aka the suits. Trinity ended up killing and rebooting him a couple of times, pissed at how he toyed with her mind. Still, he joked how nothing would change, and the sheep would want to stay in the Matrix.

Trinity and Neo vowed to rebuild, though, joking that they would add rainbows in the skies like Analyst teased — all to spark optimism and show the machines they could do whatever they wanted, whenever. The scared Analyst then watched them fly off, embracing their new life and a second chance to remake the Matrix and heal the real world, all due to the power of love.
