Question (Q): How did you get started as an entrepreneur?

Answer (A): Before starting my ear care company with my co-founder Joe Griffin, I worked for a large pharmaceutical company that specializes in ophthalmology. I found that Corporate America was too focused on the bottom line and not enough on the people they serve and the people who serve them. When I left the company, I decided to start a biotech company that put people before profit and practiced conscious capitalism, a philosophy that supports the idea that companies can be a force for good. After speaking to many local doctors, we decided to do the ear care because the doctors discovered that it was an unmet medical need that could be treated without a prescription. Ear care has been a really sleepy category with no new innovations for decades – until we showed up. We spent months and months in the lab formulating our first product, EARWAX MD, and we now have over 10 products in over 13,000 retail stores across the country and online.

Q: What is your biggest motivator?

A: My biggest motivators are the people around me. I work with an incredibly motivated and talented team who are making the lives of others better through over-the-counter health products. Your diligence motivates me, positive attitude and courage Trying out new things and taking calculated risks. I am also motivated and inspired by my mother. After staying home as a mom for most of my childhood, she decided to start her own business when she was 40 and it’s still thriving today. Her risk-taking and hard-working, brave attitude encouraged me and she is a wonderful example of reinvention and passion for your work.

Q: What accomplishments are you most proud of?

A: I am very proud that I had the courage to start my own company. I am very proud that courage outweighed my fear of failure and I am proud of the way my business partner and I do Mastering challenges as they come. It’s not easy to build a business and an environment where people come first – it takes consistent, day-to-day work. There are always challenges – daily challenges – that exceed our limits. But it is work that I am proud of and that is worthwhile.

Q: What are some tips for aspiring entrepreneurs?

A: Budding entrepreneurs should know that it is difficult to do it all on your own. It is important and comforting to have a business partner to share the ups and downs with, as well as finding someone who compliments you and has strengths that you don’t have. Since my business partner has a scientific background and is excellent at creating and understanding formulations, systems and processes, I am confident that I will be able to use my strengths in the commercialization and marketing of our products. Another tip would be to ask for help. It’s always okay to ask for help, and once you do, people start coming out of the woodworks. Most people want to help you and want you to be successful. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness; it’s smart and brave.
