Marvel’s GOTG Spinoff Present I Am Groot Release Date Set For August

Marvel officially reveals that the Guardians of the Galaxy spinoff show I Am Groot will premiere on Disney+ later this summer right before She-Hulk.

The release date for the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy spinoff show I Am Groot has been revealed, with the series confirmed to hit Disney+ in August. First introduced in live-action in James Gunn’s 2014 hit Guardians of the Galaxy, Groot has become a staple of the MCU. The character, who is voiced by Vin Diesel, appeared to die at the end of the first Guardians of the Galaxy film but would return – albeit in a younger form – in the sequel, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. II, as well as Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

The spinoff show I Am Groot was first announced in December of 2020 and is poised to join a growing number of MCU Disney+ shows, including Hawkeye, Loki, and What If…? The series consists of a series of animated shorts, all starring the titular Groot, with series creator Ryan Little also featuring as head writer. I Am Groot will feature Kristen Lepore in the director’s chair, with the filmmaker previously best known for her animation work on films like Marcel the Shell with Shoes On and the 2021 miniseries Signals.

Although fans have been anxiously awaiting a trailer for the show, Marvel has now officially revealed in a new tweet that the series will premiere on Disney+ on August 10. The announcement also comes with its own poster, featuring Baby Groot relaxing and listening to some music by a palm tree air freshener. Check out Marvel’s new tweet below:

Unfortunately, fans still have yet to get their hands on a full-length trailer for the show, but the new I Am Groot release date announcement means that they likely don’t have long to wait. She-Hulk, for example, which is scheduled to release a week after I Am Groot, has already released its first trailer, suggesting that one for Groot’s show might not be far off. Fans of Guardians of the Galaxy might still have a while to wait before they can get their hands on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 next year, but this year will see three separate appearances from the Guardians, with confirmed appearances in Thor: Love and Thunder, I Am Groot, and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special.

Although Gunn serves as a producer on the show, it remains to be seen how Diesel’s beloved tree character will fare in animated form without Gunn’s writing and direction. The new image that accompanies the release date announcement suggests that the series will be giving fans more of what they love, with Baby Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 previously proving to be a major hit. With Thor: Love and Thunder releasing in July and both I Am Groot and She-Hulk set to premiere on Disney+ in August, this summer is shaping up to be particularly great for fans of the MCU.
