The AZ series of stepper-based servo motors from Oriental Motor has established a niche for high-performance and unmatched positional accuracy for 750W and below applications.

In a relatively short period of time, the AZ series of closed-loop stepper motors has carved a niche in the automation motor sector.

The series of stepper-based motors has caused a stir by eliminating the need for a PID (proportional-integral-derivative) loop to make constant adjustments to ensure correct positioning for high-performance operation.

The stepper motor performance offered by the AZ series means that positional accuracy is increased to 10,000 steps per revolution, or 0.036 degrees per step. The AZ series motor is ready to use “right out of the box”. No tuning is required, unlike servo motors which rely on tuning to a variety of parameters to ensure efficient operation.

“The AZ series is significantly cheaper than an equivalent power servo motor; it is often as low as half the price,” said Paul Jepson, New Business Analyst, Marketing & Distribution, Oriental Motor (UK).

Other major benefits are faster acceleration and deceleration compared to an equivalent servo motor. This makes the AZ motor ideal for rapid indexing and applications which require short movements.

The AZ series is ideal for smaller applications – approximately 750W /1HP and below. The motors are also ideally suited to more flexible applications, for example, where a belt-driven pulley is used because, unlike a conventional servo motor, it is able to accommodate even the slightest movements or flexing without affecting performance.

Communications protocols are vital in today’s automation industry and the AZ series now supports all the communications and control protocols from all major players in the industry: EtherNet IP, EtherCAT, and Profinet.
