Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey said Monday that he is stepping down from his role as CEO of the social media company he founded. Parag Agrawal would replace him. Dorsey will continue to serve as a director until the 2022 meeting.

“I’m leaving Twitter because the company has its founders in good hands. In a statement, Dorsey claimed that Parag is a person I deeply trust as the CEO of Twitter. His work over the past 10 years has been transformative. I appreciate his ability, his heart and his soul very much. His time is now to guide.

What impact this change at the top will have on users is unknown, but it could mean the new CEO won’t split his time to run two companies – as Dorsey did as CEO of financial services firm Square.

Roger Entner, a technology analyst at Recon Analytics, said Jack Dorsey’s resignation means Twitter has a new CEO. “Jack split his time between Square (Twitter) and Twitter. Parag, the new CEO of Twitter, is more technically oriented towards the topics of Twitter than Jack Dorsey.

Dorsey certainly wasn’t the face of Twitter like Mark Zuckerberg is for Facebook – or Steve Jobs is for Apple. Many Americans know Jobs, Zuckerberg, and others. However, it’s unlikely that many would recognize Dorsey (the outgoing) CEO on Twitter.

Damian Radcliffe of Columbia University, Professor of Journalism and Fellow at the Tow Center for Digital Journalism, said: “It is certainly true that for many users Mark Zuckerberg is the face of Facebook and perhaps the best-known leader of a network.”

“I suspect most social network users don’t know – and probably don’t know who’s in charge,” added Radcliffe. Radcliffe said users are focusing more on having an app that is easy to use and whether it suits their communication and information needs. The Twitterati may be concerned about the ramifications, but let’s not forget that Jack left before (2008-11). This meant for his ability to run the company in a hands-on manner. It’s more than just a person. Jack Dorsey!

Hello GETTR

Twitter responded to news of Dorsey’s departure with #RIPTwitter, which became a trending topic. The hashtag #GETTR was also trendy on Monday. Many conservatively oriented Twitter users suggested switching to GETTR instead of Twitter.

Twitter is unlikely to see an exodus. But even if it did, the majority of Twitter users would not know that they are paying attention other than to the events of the C-suite. There has already been an increase in competing Twitter-like websites and this is unlikely to change with the changes at the top.

Data from the Pew Research Center shows that there are already differences between parties in the way they use social media in the United States. This trend is set to continue. In that regard, it appears to mimick other forms of media use – such as cable news and online websites – where party divisions are already firmly entrenched, ”said Radcliffe.

Radcliffe stated, “Given the allegations of former President Trump’s bias and the high profile nature of some (like Jason Miller), with newer platforms like GETTR, it’s not surprising that some conservatives will try this newer network,” Radcliffe said. And that users will be more honest. They’re also less biased. While it can be challenging for social media platforms to be successful (and the social media landscape is very busy), it is possible to make a name for yourself. It will be interesting to see if these new efforts are able to enjoy themselves like older, more established networks like YouTube and Twitter. This longevity could be compromised by the quality and usage of the website by prominent conservative influencers.

Many may leave, but they will likely return – simply because no other platform has reached the reach of Twitter.

Radcliffe stated, “I believe that many users will migrate back to older networks that are more established”. We shouldn’t forget that their algorithms tend to display more of your existing thoughts and opinions. It can also be difficult to meet people who have different views than you do. Therefore, the chances that users will use Twitter or other social networks with exactly the same content experience as liberal and conservative users are very slim.
